Nothing is sacred, no idea is too silly.
This event has ended.
Back in 2020, Kerry Liu had a uniquely RCLUB problem to solve. His F150 Raptor didn't fit in his downtown parking space. He came up with a uniquely RCLUB solution, posting this on Slack:
"So just a random idea - maybe something we need to start a separate channel for, but who would be down to do a "cheap winter beater series"? The rules would be something silly like a $2000 budget or something, it has to last all winter, every time you need to do a repair or something there is a point system, and we document it all on Slack. I've always wanted to do something like this by kind of hard to do alone - then you're just the loser driving a 1982 rusted-out Celica."
Pandemic-bored RCLUB Members had a lot of time to spend on Slack, and they ran straight to the classifieds with this idea. The budget was set at $1,500. Rusted-out Celicas and more were now contenders, and we even shifted the Craigslist market price on used Geo Metros (suddenly, those sellers knew what they had). Rules were proposed, a point system was designed, and we had collectively come up with the Winter Beater Charity Challenge.
We had a tonne of fun, kept some tow truck operators busy, and raised tens of thousands for Covenant House Toronto. In the years that followed, we upped the budget to Kerry's originally proposed $2,000 and adapted the rules for team play. Following a 2022/23 season that was largely cancelled due to warm weather and waning participation, we took a hiatus from #WBCC for a year.
This summer, a group of RCLUB Members teamed up to collectively buy a retired Winter Beater, Cindy the Monster Miata. They self-organized the purchase cost and maintenance split, worked together to get it back on the road, and they now manage a shared wheel time schedule. Their sense of fun and teamwork has been so inspiring that we think it might be time to bring back the #WBCC.
We've been tossing around a few ideas - team play is here to stay, and we'll be capping the number of participating cars, but everything else is up for debate! In the original spirit of the #WBCC, we're looking for your silliest ideas on how this can work. Together, let's make this the best #WBCC season yet! All together now, let's recite the #WBCC motto: It's not supposed to be fair, it's supposed to be fun!
